STAND FIRM: Filling Leaky Souls with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:15-21
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,
20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

"Much of the weakness, defeat and lethargy in our spiritual life can be attributed to the fact that we are not constantly being filled with the Holy Spirit."

Preach to SOUL
1) Personally - Alone in prayer & in the word
2) Corporately - Addressing one another, lifting off burdens by speaking the truth to one another’s souls
3) Worshipfully - Singing and making melody to the Lord with my heart (not from lips but from heart—hearts can stray even though lips can praise)
4) Thankfully - Beginning to thank God ALWAYS and for EVERYTHING

This results in us submitting to one another.

Imperative: "BE"
We must remind "ourselves" what the truth is - and WHO God is.

What is our Soul?
= Mind/Will/Emotions
The seat of our being - our individual personhood/personality.
The soul is "SELF"

Greek’s three words for LIFE:
- Bios speaks of the body’s physical life.
- Psuche means the soul or soul-life.
- Zoe is the spirit’s life given by God’s Spirit.

The soul is POWERFUL.  (Our will is there)
The soul is WHERE we are filled with the Spirit.
The soul is WHERE the "heavy laden" feelings come (rest for your "Souls"
Matthew 11:28-30
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
The soul is WHERE the dividing must happen
Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The reason for all this: It is FOR freedom Christ has set us free!
Galatians 5:1
1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

We were called to freedom, brothers.
Galatians 5:13
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

"Therefore" or "So then" or "Because of that" or "For that reason…"
STAND FIRM - and - DO NOT SUBMIT (again) to a (difficult) YOKE of slavery"

What does he mean? "Yoke of slavery"
This passage is referring to the SLAVERY of sin.

That’s EXACTLY what I’m talking about.
The SLAVERY to worry, fear, anxiety

This all links back to ABIDING - "Practicing the Presence"

Matthew 11: 28-30
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Day by day - every hour

- The Yoke shift from Easy to Difficult
- The weight of the burden shifts - from light to heavy

Rest for your SOULS

An excellent, real life example: Psalm 57:1-10
(One of four "destroy not" Psalms - when David was hiding from King Saul in a cave)
Psalm 57:1-10
1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.
2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
3 He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!
4 My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts—the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
6 They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah
7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody!
8 Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!
9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.

v1 - Only in GOD can our soul take refuge
v4 - Our soul is "in the midst of lions" - Ravenous, prowling around seeking someone to devour (I Peter 5:8)
v6 - Our soul is bowed down - heavy laden - burdened - loaded with care - humbled - brought low - CLOSE to the pit the enemy dug for us
v8 - Awake my Glory/My Soul/My Whole being/My self!

Three Jumpstarts - Three attempts to get back to our heart being steadfast and begin living by faith instead of living by sight (THIS IS WHAT WE MUST DO!)
v3 - "HE WILL"
Then the prophetic song of faith arises!

AWAKE my soul!
I WILL awake!
I WILL give thanks!
I WILL sing praise!
For your steadfast love is great!
Your faithfulness is high!
So - BE EXALTED! LET YOUR GLORY be over all the earth!

David’s circumstances did not immediately change - in fact not for some time did he become king of Israel after this point. Long road to go.

BUT he preached to his SOUL and he was changed! He was back to faith living instead of living by sight.

MAKE EVERY EFFORT / STRIVE to enter the rest!
Hebrews 4:11
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
