Revelation 3:14-22

Large, Thriving City.  Successful. Laid upon a great trafficway for commerce.

Laodicea’s Name means “Rule of the People” or “Justice of the People”

Only About 20 miles from Colosse.

Paul probably planted a church in Laodicea.

Laodicea is known for four things:

1. Poor, Lukewarm water supply - making the city vulnerable to enemy attack.

2. Financial Wealth -  Very prosperous city.  Large in trade.

3. Textile Industry - specifically famous for a glossy black dyed wool.

4. Eye Salve - exported around the world at that time.

Prophetic Implications of Jesus’ words to them.

(Revelation 19:10) Testimony of Jesus = spirit of Prophecy

The very HEART of prophecy is to reveal Jesus!

Significance of BUYING

BUY - From whom?  --- From Jesus!

(Matthew 13 - Man who bought a field)

(Matthew 25 - Wise virgins who bought oil)

Isaiah 55:1-3a

A) Buy Gold - Truly Rich

B) “Buy white garments” - Jesus’ Righteousness

C) “Buy eye salve so you can see” - Anointing of the Spirit

APPLICATION 1) A renewed appreciation of the prophetic ways God speaks to us through life circumstances & events.

(v19)  Rebuke / Chastisement -

Because of His great love for them!   (Had I hated you, I’d have left you alone until your ruin in sin!)

Phileo Love -   Deep love as a friend.   Intense Personal Affection.

(Hebrews 12) He disciplines us BECAUSE we’re legitimate sons!  And that we might “share in His holiness”   -   (Psalm 94) He disciplines us “that we may find rest from days of trouble”

= Rebuke Unto Fellowship

Application 2) Beginning to believe and receive chastisement & discipline from the Lord as signs of his GREAT love for us and His INTENSE desire for relationship!     His kindness (not threats) lead us to repentance!

(v20) Behold, I stand at the Door.

The door of the heart.   (Make his home in your heart by faith)

What does His knocking sound like?  ---  His VOICE.

(Isaiah 55:2-3) = KEY,    Listen....... Incline Your Ear ........  Hear that your Soul may live.....

But Hearing isn’t enough.   Many hear.  You must OPEN.

Open the door   --- Open to His love, His friendship, His relationship, His leadership.

Song of Solomon 5:2  >>  I slept, but my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved is knocking.

“Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one, for my head is wet with dew,

my locks with the drops of the night.”

“Deipnon”  =  (DAPE-non) The evening meal, the largest meal of the day.  (Supper).

Application 3)   Hear with the ears of your spirit & Open your heart to Him in intimate fellowship

Promise of Reward

He who conquers.....

Lukewarmness / Indifference / Compromise / Self Reliance

Those who overcome lukewarmness get a SPECIAL reward -  To sit, enthroned with Jesus!

Laodicea thought they were rich, prospered & needed nothing

Jesus was rich, prospered & needed nothing

Laodicea was wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, naked.

Jesus became wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, naked for their sake

Application 4)   HOW do we conquer & overcome?    By Being HOT!

First Step Out of Lukewarmness =    Hearing the voice of Jesus

Second Step out of Lukewarmness = Opening the door of your heart to Him

THEN we conquer!
