Notes

2 Corinthians 11:3

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

1 Timothy 2:14

and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.

Ephesians 4:22

to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

Galatians 6:7

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

2 Timothy 3:13

while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Revelation 18:3

For all nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”

Just under 100 times we are warned about deception in the scriptures.

We must be aware of multiple dimensions of deception that are seeping into the church and our personal lives.

I believe though that the largest deception in the church is listed in James 1:22-25

James 1:22-25

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

The difference between a consumer and a disciple is: The disciple hears the word and obediently applies it to his life.

From this passage we learn these facts:

1. The hearer only of the word is walking in self-deception

2. The hearer only lives in a forgetful identity crises as a disciple

3. The doer of the word is BLESSED (happy & fortunate) in his doing

The simple question this morning is:

Are you doing all that you have heard and thus are blessed and not deceived?
