Colossians 1:13-20

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Colossians 1:18

(NIV)

And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

(ESV)

And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

(NASB)

He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

(AMP)

He also is the Head of [His] body, the church; seeing He is the Beginning, the Firstborn from among the dead, so that He alone in everything and in every respect might occupy the chief place [stand first and be preeminent].

My mission is to talk about the Supremacy of Jesus Christ in the heavens and earth as well as in your life.

Supremacy: The quality or state of having more power, authority, or status than anyone else;

Because, though Jesus is popular or needed, that does not mean He supreme.

Jesus’ Popularity:

-Jesus is number one on the most popular historical figure lists.

-Of 130 million books printed and bound, 40% of them are about Jesus.

-Time is centered around Jesus – BC & AD

-1/3 of 7 billion people say they are Christian and He is widely known among the other billions.

-Jesus is Google’d around 25 million times a month on the internet.

Jesus is needed:

-People need him as a savior from hell

-People need him as a prophet

-People need him as a teacher

-etc.

But these realities do not mean that He has the Supremacy in you or the Church.

Who is Jesus:

1. His central identity is:

Colossians 2:9

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

2. His manifestations are:

The image of the invisible God

The maker of visible and invisible realms

Owner of all things and reason for their existence

Redeemer of all things

First born over Creation and from the Dead

3. Personally to us He is everything:

Our redemption is a person –

Colossians 1:14, 20

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Our deliverer is a person –

Colossians 1:13

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

God’s mystery is a person IN US –

Colossians 1:27-29

To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

Our “new” life is a person –

Colossians 3:3-4

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Our fullness from God is a person –

Colossians 2:9-10

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

Is Jesus becoming Supreme in your faith, affections, decisions, and future?

Is He your “first place” in all things?
