In 2 Kings 2, Elijah asked Elisha what he would desire to have before Elijah was supernaturally escorted from this earthly life. Elisha now stands before the greatest pray'er that he has ever known with the opportunity to ask for anything he wishes. Would it be money, fame, safety, or health? No. Elisha ends up asking for the greatest thing that a human being could ever ask, he asks for a double-portion of the spirit that was upon Elijah. Acknowledging the highness of the request, Elijah says you have asked for a hard thing. In actuality, what he asked for was the firstborn sons portion of the Holy Spirit and his anointing presence.
The Lord invites us to present request of all kinds before him. And we should pray for every need we have. But I wanted to encourage that in all of your asking, ask for the Holy Spirit. Even be so bold as to ask for a double-portion of the Spirit. The double portion was the portion for the firstborn son. And praise the Lord that Jesus, the firstborn over all creation and from the dead, has secured the double-portion from the Father and will gladly pour him out in increasing measures upon the hungry of heart.
So please diligently pray for more of the Spirit for yourself, your spouse, your children, your friends, your pastor, and the church worldwide with a confidence that Jesus, the firstborn, has secured for us the double-portion.
“Instead of shame my people will inherit a double-portion, “ Isa. 61:7
