2 Timothy 3:1-5

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

We were designed by God to be driven by Love.

Matthew 22:34-40

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 6:21, 24

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

The last days will bring a Love Crisis:

Revelation 2:4

But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

Matthew 24:12

And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

Sin, in one sense, is a "Worship Disorder" or a "Love Disorder".

2 Timothy 4:9-10

Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

In a very real sense we must deal with the "High Places" of our hearts.

The High Places in the Old Testament were places of elevation (hills or mountains) where worship of gods would take place.

In Exodus 34:11-16 the Israelites are missioned with cleansing the land of the "High Places" of idolatry and its worshippers.

Exodus 34:11-16

“Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 12 Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13 You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their Asherim 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they whore after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and you are invited, you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters whore after their gods and make your sons whore after their gods.

Identifying marks of a High Place:

1) A place of elevation - high and exalted above other things as a place of priority and visible

2) A place of worship - submission, honor, and affection was shared for the god worshipped

3) A place of sacrifice - blood of animals, children, purity, money, etc.

There were four types of "High Places" throughout the history of Israel:

1) Pagan god High Places - largely identified by sexual immorality, child sacrifice, and money

2) Pagan god & Jehovah High Places - mixtures of pagan worship & true worship

3) Jehovah God High Places - wrong place but right practice of worship

4) The One True High Place For worship of Jehovah God in Jerusalem where the Temple was built.

COLDHEARTED kings of Israel, or Judah, loved sin and the favor of men so they would actually tolerate, finance, and participate in the building of idolatry and High Places.

HALFHEARTED kings brought reform in the nation removing most idolatry but left the "High Places".

WHOLEHEARTED kings went all the way and removed all idolatry, even the "High Places".

Counsel:

The central High Place that we should look to is Golgotha where the sacrifice of Jesus took place.

Then we should be asking the Holy Spirit to search our hearts to reveal "High Places" in us that are stealing away our affections.

Then repent and obey in the destruction of these as revealed.

And always ramp up our full devotion to and heart affection for the Lord Jesus and his Kingdom.
