An equipping ministry to Disciple the Church.
A mission base to Send the Church.
Theme and purpose of Gospel of John: John 20:30-31
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed waiting for the moving of the water; 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
I. The sign:
Healing of 38 year invalid who is incapable of getting to freedom from bondage.
This is like Israel: Deuteronomy 2:14
And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.
Done at Sheep Gate - where lost sheep lay
Done at Pool of Bethesda - "House of Mercy"
There were five roofed colonnades - 5 = Grace
Man does not ask for healing but explains how he fails at getting it
Man is healed and told to carry that which carried him on the Sabbath
II. Believing Refined:
The man's faith was in an angel and water stirrings - possibly religious superstition
The man's frustrations show also that his faith was in man's ability to work and attain
The man is confronted with faith in religion and works instead of grace in Christ
III. Life Defined:
This is a life that comes by grace through Jesus
This is a life that heals
This is a life that transcends religion
This is a life that frees from slave living and manifests moment by moment sonship
Sonship is gift of belief John 1:12 and is defined in John 5:19, 30
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
John 5:19, 30
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
The key is to rest from our work and enter into grace by faith Hebrews 4:9-11
So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
Jesus wants you to stop working and to start believing him for the grace that gives you His supernatural life which frees you from slavery to sin, works, law, religion, etc. and brings you into SONSHIP!
Then you will work with the Father and not for the Father.
Then you will work by relationship not for relationship.
Then you will work from son-rest instead of trying to rest from slave-work.
Do you know this life?
Are you working and believing for the life of God that only comes through faith by grace?
Stop working to get to a place of healing and receive his healing today.
Stop working to earn God's favor and just receive his abundant favor in Christ today.
Adam was made on the 6th day. So his first day was the 7th day of rest. Then on his second day, the 8th day, he began to work.
Rest and then work is the divine order for God's sons.
Work and then rest is the upside down order of slaves of the law.
Let us love, live, and mission from a place of rest in the grace of Christ working the grace-filled work of the Father.
