By Faith: Part 1 - The Evil of Unbelief
September 29, 2018      |     By: Sam McVay, Jr.      |      Category: Sermons

Sadly, unbelief is not recognized as an evil, God offending, and soul killing sin but rather as an accepted struggle in this hard walk with an invisible God. Sam discusses how to renew our will, in Christ, and pick up the sword of the Word of God to slay the Goliath of unbelief.

Notes

2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.

“By faith we understand...” Hebrews 11:3
“By faith Able…” Hebrews 11:4
“By faith Enoch...” Hebrews 11:5
“By faith Noah…” Hebrews 11:7
“By faith Abraham...” Hebrews 11:9

Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Faith is a primary subject of Jesus in the gospels.

He is amazed at the faith of the Centurion.

He is also amazed at the unbelief in Nazareth.

Unbelief is the underlying foundation for all God-rejecting sins as well as the primary reason for the lack of possession of our inheritance in Christ.

Sadly, unbelief is not recognized as an evil, God offending, and soul killing sin but rather as an accepted struggle in this hard walk with an invisible God.

I believe we look sympathetically upon unbelief when we should see it has something to be killed immediately!

Unbelief endorses and gives platform to the “lying mission” of our enemy.

Unbelief removes all possibilities of intimacy and receiving from God.

Hebrews 3:12-19 (ESV)
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.
13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?
17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Hebrews 4:1-2 (ESV)
1 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.
2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

Unbelief stole the inheritance in the Old Covenant times and it will do the same in the New Covenant times.

The eyes of unbelief and the eyes of faith can look at the very same circumstance or situation but have two radically different responses.

I believe the Lord has and is working to free our hearts and minds from the murky swamp that is unbelief where many creatures attack us to devour.

Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction (evidence) of things not seen.

Unbelief removes our assurance and conviction leaving us un-anchored in the ever shifting sand of feelings.

Let us by our renewed I (will) in Christ pick up the sword of the Word of God and slay the Goliath of unbelief in our hearts.
