Rich Mullins - "The Love of God"
Joy and sorrow are this ocean
And in their every ebb and flow
Now the Lord a door has opened
That all Hell could never close
Here I'm tested and made worthy
Tossed about but lifted up
In the reckless raging fury
That they call the love of God
Psalm 42:5-11 (NIV)
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.
8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Hope (n): A desire - accompanied by confident assurance or expectation of or belief in fulfillment
Hope (v): to cherish a desire - with anticipation - to want something to happen
Those who HOPE in the Lord will:
- Inherit the Land
- Never Be Put to Shame
- Mount up on Wings like Eagles
Romans 5:3-5 (NIV)
3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Suffering ==> Perseverance
Perseverance ==> Character
Character ==> Hope
Hebrews 6:13-20 (NIV)
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,
14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”
15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.
17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.
18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.
19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,
20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
Q) What is God's unchanging purpose for us? (v17)
A) To bless us, and give us many (spiritual) descendants (disciples)
Q) Who are the "heirs" of what was promised to Abraham?
A) We are - the Church!
Q) How did God confirm His "unchanging" purpose? (v17)
A) By two "unchangeable" things (v18)
- His Promise (v13)
- His Oath (v17)
Q) Why did God do this?
A1) we (heirs) can TAKE HOLD of the Hope set before us
A2) we can be GREATLY Encouraged
A3) we have an Anchor for the Soul
A4) it (hope) enters (while we hold on) the inner sanctuary (the Holy of Holies, where God's presence dwells)
Strength = Joy
Romans 12:12 (NIV)
12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
1) Trust His Word
3) Constant Practice
4) Dual Heart Focus: Jesus' Presence & Hope of Your Inheritance
Sarah Young "Jesus Calling - Enjoying Peace in His Presence"
Hope is a golden cord connecting you to heaven. … without the cord of hope, your head may slump and your feet may shuffle as you journey uphill with [God]. Hope lifts your perspective from your weary feet to the glorious view you can see from the high road.
