Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV)
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
The Lord knows his children’s hearts as well as their ways.
As parents we should seek to discern our children’s hearts.
What they do is coming from who they are.
Every child is the same in some regards:
- desires love
- will grow up
- struggles with rebellion
But each child is unique in regard to:
Their areas of struggle not only need to be dealt with but can tell you something unique about their calling, gifting, and strengths.
Taking time to know and discern each child heart will explain and give wisdom in how to train them.
This grows in importance as the child grows older.
There are general child training practices that apply to every child:
- respect for others
But there are some unique practices that will differ depending on the child
- hyper or calm
- creative or logical
- verbal or quiet
I believe there is a universal grievance when we see a child that has been completely conformed and made to be in the image of his father or mother. It’s as if their identity is being covered up. When you sense that suffocating of life and beauty that was meant to come out of them boxed in to conform with the will of a misguided parent, often out of good intentions. Picture the overly sheltered homeschooled child with a heavy principle driven parent, motivated by fear of the outside tainting their child. You can sense the counterfeit nature as the child tries unsuccessfully to reproduce what is expected of him. It is equally as grieving when we see a child that has been overly indulged in their special gifts or talents without addressing their character, sacrificing obedience and humility at the alter of creativity and success.
- These are living souls, created by the Master! Each made in His image and independent from us to take their rightful place in the body. They are so individual, so strong in the purposes He made them for. We shouldn’t be trying to reproduce ourselves or living vicariously through them but prayerfully and strategically guiding them with the help of the Holy Spirit. Future Kings and Queens we are stewarding; training them to know their place and value, and to know their place. We are partnering with the Holy Spirit to establish His governance in their lives ultimately.
- Let’s fan the flame of who they are, praying constantly for wisdom, guarding on all sides the enemy’s schemes to blind them and us to their identity. This should revolutionize how we see ourselves as well. Where is the Holy Spirit trying to unlock gifting and purpose that has been stifled? Where has our soul gone rogue and needs “governing” for maximum fruitfulness?? Colossians 1:16 All things were created by Him and for Him.
- This is a sober and high calling, the enemy is raging to keep the glory of Jesus from being manifest on the earth!
