Life Empowered by the Presence of God and at the Pace of Grace
There are reasons God tells us to rest.
It gives God the opportunity to speak and provide specifically and supernaturally.
We stop and receive THE GIFT OF LIMITS.
Take A Breath!
We are Sons and Daughters – NOT SLAVES!
Exodus 16:25-30 (NASB)
25 “Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field.
26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none.”
27 It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.
28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My instructions?
29 See, the Lord has given you the sabbath; therefore, He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.”
30 So the people rested on the seventh day.”
Five Truths About The Sabbath:
1) The Sabbath is a Commandment
Exodus 20:8-11 (NASB)
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle
or your sojourner who stays with you.
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore, the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
2) The Sabbath is a Pattern and a Promise
Exodus 31:16-17 (NASB)
16 “So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.’
17 It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed.”
3) God Is Serious About It
Numbers 15:32-41 (NASB)
32 “Now while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the sabbath day.
33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation;
34 and they put him in custody because it had not been declared what should be done to him.
35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.”
36 So all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him [r]to death with stones, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
37 The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying,
38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue.
39 It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot,
40 so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God.
41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord your God.”
4) Unobserved Sabbaths Accumulate
2 Chronicles 36:20-21 (NASB)
20 “Those who had escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon; and they were servants to him and to his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia,
21 to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths. All the days of its desolation it kept sabbath until seventy years were complete.”
5) God Made The Sabbath For Our Benefit
Mark 2:23-28 (NASB)
23 “And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain.
24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
25 And He *said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry;
26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he
also gave it to those who were with him?”
27 Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
All of us have four tanks:
1) Emotional Tank: Feeling - Relating
2) Mental Tank: Thinking - Reasoning
3) Physical Tank: Moving - Work, Play, Health
4) Spiritual Tank: Will - Overflowing or Fumes
