Body Life - Keeping Ourselves Uncontaminated from the World
August 20, 2017      |     By: Jonathan Brickley      |      Category: Sermons

The body of Christ around you is meant for this: to keep you in intimate fellowship and connection with the Lord Jesus. Jonathan speaks of attaining the full measure of Christ and how it involves each part of the body doing its work. What is YOUR work?

James 1:27
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted (contaminated, stained or spotted) by the world.

1) Beginning Point is Purity
1 Peter 2:11
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

2) Contamination by & from the World
1 John 2:15-16
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

How do we "Keep" ourselves from becoming polluted?
1) Where ? - The Soul
2) Defense not offense
3) Marriage Example
4) Church Example - Three types of "koinonia" in the church
     Realignment       -     Equipping
     Renewal              -    Encouragement / Edification
     Refreshing          -     Enjoyment

Acts 2:42,46-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer...
46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Romans 12:2
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Ephesians 4:11-16
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,
12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

1 Peter 4:10
10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Two Ways to Live the Christian Life
"IN"     -   Abraham  (Imperfectly, by faith, loved God)
"OF"    -  Lot (Imperfectly, by sight, loved the world)

1) Lot "chose for himself" the whole plain of the Jordan
2) set out "towards" Sodom
3) pitched his tents "near" Sodom
4) began living "in" Sodom
5) leader in Sodom

2 Peter 1:5-11
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,
11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
