If you want to take hold of that which is truly life, then you want what Jesus wants for you: lay up for yourselves a firm foundation in the heavenly realms. Jonathan walks through the seven steps outlined in I Timothy 6 to building treasures in heaven.
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV) 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
He’s calling us to:
1. Freedom - from fear of loss
2. Focus - on the mission
In spiritual work, there is a need for unsettled income, because that necessitates intimate fellowship with God; constant, clear revelation of His will and direct divine support.
The more unsettled a person’s living is, the more he will be cast on God. The more an attitude of trustful dependence on God is cultivated, the more spiritual work will be done…
The more money you spend on others, the more your income will increase, and the more you try to save, the more you will be troubled by rust and thieves.
Matthew 6:24-27 (NIV)
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
James 5:1… 1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.
I Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV)
17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
